Lunch time adventure -: Do Ho Suh, Passege/s

At a time when migration is looked at in a negative manner, it was a breath of fresh air when I heard about this exhibit of fabric structures which showed the different places that the artist, Do Ho Suh had lived in, I was excited to go and check it out.

I went out during lunch to the Victoria Miro Gallery. I don’t know how they find these amazing artists; all I can say is keep it up guys. I headed up to the third floor which is where they had the exhibit of Passage/s, 2015 and I was amazed at the detail of the structure. Each block is a different place where Do lived and the passage is a metaphor of the flow of life. We always focus on the destination and we forget about the things that happen in between. Walking through the corridor through the different colours, felt like how it would be when you move through different a culture which is what one would do as you live around the world. Each culture you experience, you learn more from it and become a better person.

At a time when other countries are focusing on building walls, this one passage to me showed me the importance of being open and having the opportunity to move easily and learn from the other cultures. We shouldn’t isolate ourselves. There’s a whole world out there waiting to be explored, but when we build walls, we are introducing fear and reluctance to experience something new. I hope we all have the same prayer, to pray that the doors remain open and that we keep pushing forward for things that take us forward as a human race rather than taking us back.
