The Road to Skye - via a pit stop to Bamburgh and St Abbs Head
We left the Yorkshire Coast and continued on north towards Bamburgh another beautiful coastal village. Bamburgh is famous for it’s castle, which is pretty much the main attraction in this gorgeous stone town. You can walk all around the castle or sit in the park (there are also options to visit the inside of the castle and learn more about the history. As we are living in crazy times, booking is essential before hand which is why we missed out.) You can also stay in the castle which is something I found out from some patrons who had been sitting close to our dinner table, I do wish we had thought of doing that !
For dinner, we went to the Potted Lobster, a restaurant on the Michelin Guide and with good reason. One of their specials was the scallops and they literally melted in my mouth, even writing this, I'm reliving the burst of flavours that exploded in my mouth. Make sure you book ! You don’t want to be disappointed.
The following day we headed out towards Edinburgh but made a detour to St Abbs Head. St Abbs is a beautiful coastal village with origins that date back to the 19th Century. The highlight of St Abbs is, of course, the cliffs where seabirds come here to nest between April -July. We should really have bought some binoculars because I would have loved to see some of the other birds other than seagulls. I was able to see some guillemots as they are pretty distinctive with their black tops and white bottoms. I was sure I had seen a penguin!
Some beautiful walks in the National Nature Reserve can take you either down to the Mire Loch or up towards to lighthouse. I’m marrying an adventure geek, so of course, we did both, and in hindsight, I am glad that we did!
When we got back to the town, we went to Old School Cafe for lunch. The food options are plentiful, taste amazing, and you won’t feel like you’ve broken the bank.
After lunch we headed back into the car and onto the A1.
Next stop, Edinburgh
